Of the three Biosphere core areas on the Tonle Sap Lake, Prek Toal is the most accessible from Siem Reap and the most popular with birdwatchers. Tonle Sap Lake & Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary

Cambodia’s Great Tonle Sap Lake sits only 15 km south of town, a unique eco-system and cultural area offering the opportunity to see a different side of the Siem Reap - floating villages, cultural and nature tours, birdwatching.

The Tonle Sap Lake is the most prominent feature on the map of Cambodia - a huge dumbbell-shaped body of water stretching across the northwest of the country. In the wet season, the lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, swelling to an expansive 12,000 km2. During the dry half of the year it shrinks to as small as 2500 km2, draining into the Tonle Sap River, which meanders southeast, eventually merging with the Mekong River at the 'chaktomuk' confluence at Phnom Penh. During the wet season a unique hydrologic phenomenon causes the Tonle Sap River to reverse direction, filling the lake.

The engine of this phenomenon is the Mekong River, which becomes bloated with snow melt and runoff from the monsoon rains. The swollen Mekong backs up into the Tonle Sap at the point where the rivers meet at Chaktomuk, forcing the waters of the Tonle Sap River back into the lake. The inflow expands the area of lake more than five-fold, inundating the surrounding forested floodplain and supporting an extraordinarily rich and diverse eco-system.

More than 100 varieties of waterbirds including several threatened and endangered species, over 200 species of fish, as well as crocodiles, turtles, macaques, otter and other wildlife inhabit the inundated mangrove forests. The Lake is also an important commercial resource, providing more than half of the fish consumed in Cambodia. In harmony with the specialized ecosystems, the human occupations at the edges of the lake is similarly distinctive - floating villages, towering stilted houses, huge fish traps, and an economy and way of life deeply intertwined with the lake, the fish, the wildlife and the cycles of rising and falling waters.

Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary at the Prek Toal core area of the Biosphere Reserve has been called "the single most important breeding ground in Southeast Asia for globally threatened large waterbirds." The Biosphere covers 31,282 hectares at the northwest tip of the Lake and plays host to species including Greater and Lesser Adjuncts, Black-headed Ibis, Painted Stork, Milky Stork, Spot-billed Pelican, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle and many more species. Of the three Biosphere core areas on the Tonle Sap Lake, Prek Toal is the most accessible from Siem Reap and the most popular with birdwatchers. The best time of year for viewing is the dry season (December-May) when flocks of migratory birds congregate at Prek Toal. As the dry season progresses and the water recedes, the number of birds increases but the travel to some of the more important viewing areas becomes more difficult.

During the night of your stay in Siem Reap, you can enjoy Siem Reap nightlife, night markets, foods and other fun activities in Siem Reap downtown, Pub Street areas and city formerly French colonial head quarter.

Return and drop you off at your preferred destination.

Prek Toal Nature reserve and Floating Village!

We went for the one day guided tour of Prek Toal nature reserve and a floating village near to the reserve, the experience was fantastic. Mr Sophoan Rath took great care in looking after us on the excursion and was very informative as well as genuinely friendly. The ranger that took us on the boat around the nature reserve was obviously very well attuned to the area and it’s flora and fauna. My partner is a keen birder, myself not so much, BUT I really enjoyed the trip and getting to see so many tropical species was quite special. The floating village tour was eye opening. After lunch, we were taken around the village by paddle boat (optional & life jackets provided) and although (more due to our combined weight than anything else!) capsize seemed imminent at every wave caused by power boats, the lady that rowed us around did an amazing job, and it really gave an insight to how skilled in and around the water the people living on the floating village are. 100% would recommend the experience if you are in the area visiting the temple complexes of Angkor Wat. For those interested in the natural beauty of Cambodia this is a trip worth making in itself.

Exceptional Tour Service

We visited Siem Reap in November. If you want to spend hours and hours reviewing competitor reviews - you can waste the time like I did! I spent hours and hours prior to our visit reading through various tour guide/service reviews on Trip Advisor. After reading numerous competitor reviews I decided that I would be booking our tours through Sophoan Rath - this choice was decided through reading the countless excellent reviews on Sophoan on trip advisor and also being aware this company is a nationally accredited service. Having never travelled to Cambodia I wanted a tour service that was helpful, knowledgeable, safe and reliable. We are so pleased that we booked our tours through Sophoan. He provided everything that we wanted and more! Sophoan was prompt with answering all my questions via phone and email and has excellent English skills which was helpful as we spoke no Khmer. There is no words to explain the excellence in customer service we received from Sophoan, he started as being our tour guide and ended as a friend. Sophoan arrived at our motel early in a comfortable late model SUV, air conditioning (which is a must!) and a lovely driver. We found Sophoan to be extremely knowledgeable about the history of this beautiful country and is willing to share his own experiences and knowledge with you.

Sophoan went above and beyond!! He helped us with organising our trip, was always assisting with opening and closing doors, providing bottles of cold water to even checking if the ladies toilet was ok to use and providing toilet paper if necessary - these are all small things however in a foreign country he made us feel so comfortable and safe. We toured the local temples, had an all day tour to Preah Vihear (which I highly recommend) and a tour of the floating village. Sophoan knew we were very interested in learning more about the Khmer culture and even arranged for us to visit a local school as we had bought with us pencils and stickers as gifts to the school. We cannot speak highly enough of Sophoan and we are so grateful for all his help and for allowing us to experience and visit his beautiful country. Sophoan made us feel like family and we have already booked another trip back to Camobodia in 2018 and we can't wait to catch up with our dear friend. Thank you for everything Sophoan xx

Couldn't have had a better Siem Reap experience with Sophoan!

I traveled to Siem Reap with five friends from Duke University during a SE Asia trip, and I could not have asked for a better experience than the one given to us by our guide, Sophoan Rath. Phoan is not only one of the kindest guides I have ever had the pleasure of traveling with, but he is also one of the most engaging, fun, and well informed. Our time in Angkor Wat was beautifully arranged, well timed, and constantly interesting and informative. My friends and I could not have been more grateful for our experience!

Loved our tour!

Took a one day tour of the Angkor complex. Sophoan was a wonderful tour guide. English is excellent. Patient, reliable and catered to our needs exactly. It was great traveling in the small group of 3. We were able to figure out the best way to utilize our short time there. One of the best parts of having a local guide is hearing not only about the temples but about his background, the country's history, government, culture, etc. He read our interest level well- i.e. told us just enough about what we wanted to know regarding the temples without us being overloaded with information. Definitely recommend his services!

Private guided tour

We recently completed a three day-visit to Siam Reap. Our guide was Sophoan Rath (poan45@gmail.com). Siam Reap was a memorable experience made more so by the attentive involvement of the gentleman who shared with us his city and it's varied attractions. Sophoan provided companionship as well as insight to the archeological offerings, the community, history and development of Cambodia. My wife and I rarely engage guide services. The true win, however, is when, through the involvement of your guide you experience not only the tourist offerings but leave with insight as how a community functions, it's history, politics and it's development aspirations. Anyone seeking similar involvement I enthusiastically recommend our friend and tour guide Sophoan Rath.

Worthwhile to listen to your friends - Poan is the best guide

I planned to visit Cambodia last year but I cancelled it just because Poan was not available at that time.

Yes, my friend who recommended Poan to me was that serious, she convinced me to wait for another chance rather than having one who is not proved to be as good. So, I waited a year and finally visited Cambodia just last week and it was worthwhile waiting! Before we arrived in Siem Reap, Poan arranged everything from hotel (stayed in Victoria Angkor, it is a fairly nice report & spa hotel at a very reasonable price) to well thought-out itineraries. I have been travelling around many countries and by far Poan is the best tour guide I have met. His kind and heartwarming hospitality makes you feel at home throughout your trip. I had so much fun talking with him about the ancient & modern history of Cambodia, he has experienced (or survived...) the Khmer Rouge regime and shared with me his vivid memory of that cruel time.

Poan has never got tired of my endless questions, and most of my questions were repeated due to my bad memory... Hey friends out there, if you are planning a trip to Siem Reap for Angkor Wat tour, you have my word that he is the right one.

I already miss him who became my best friend and cannot wait to see him again on my next trip!

Sophoan Rath - Fantastic guide

For a great tour of the Angkor Wat temples and the region, we can't recommend Sophoan enough. He was a fantastic and highly knowledgeable tour guide, a very nice and enthusiastic man who's English was impeccable. He also gave us a great insight into the history of Cambodia as he has lived through some of the worst of it. Lisa and David ps - Sophoan it took us long enough to write this, thanks again for making our trip so memorable.

Poan is the perfect guide.

My first trip to Cambodia was a few years ago and toured around the Siem Reap area and Poan was an amazing guide, the best I've ever had. He is genuinely friendly and is very professional. I've toured other areas of Cambodia on subsequent trips and again Poan made all the arrangements and we had a great time. He knowledge is so complete and adds many insights to the trip by explaining about Khmer history and culture.

I've had the opportunity to travel to many countries and had many guides throughout my years of traveling. Poan is the best there is! Richard C.

Sophoan - great guide

I was in Cambodia last may and engaged the services of Sophoan to give me and my girlfriend a tour of Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. He was very knowledgeable about the history of Angkor Wat, the temple builders and general Cambodian history. His spoken English was excellent and his car was in great condition. Besides the temple tour, we were able to do a bit of birdwatching on the side. I will be engaging his service again this coming December to give us a tour of the Tonle Sap Lake. I wholeheartly recommend his services.

Excellent day trip to Prek Toal reserve

We booked a one-day trip to Prek Toal which turned out to be truly memorable although the water level was too low to permit out boat to get all the way into the reserve (we visited in April, at the very end of the dry season, when the water is lowest). Sophoan Rath was a terrific companion: friendly, helpful, highly knowledgeable about the history, culture, and natural history of Cambodia. Everything ran like clockwork, and the "lunch boxes" from the Blue Pumpkin contained enough (wonderful) food for an army! Sophoan even thought to call our hotel to ask them to make up a packed breakfast for us because of the 5:00 a.m. pickup which meant that we could not get breakfast at the hotel. Highly recommended, though I would suggest visiting earlier in the dry season when the water is higher. Even so, we had great views of many birds, including three of our four main target species (Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Lesser and Greater Adjutant). No Milky Stork, alas. Getting a close-up look at the local fishing culture was fascinating, though it is distressing to see that fishing continues within the Prek Toal sanctuary and that the rangers turn a blind eye in exchange for a payoff in fish. Not a cheap tour, by any means, but a day to remember forever!

Amazing trip to Cambodia!

My friend and I spent 4 days in Cambodia visiting more than a handful of temples to gain a clear understanding of its rich history. Our tourguide, Sophoan Roth, was very knowledgable and informative which definitely helped make our trip a memorable one! One of the highlights of the trip was arriving at Angkor Wat before dawn to witness the amazing sunrise. We also visited Ta Phrom (the temple where Tomb Raider was filmed) and the Tonlé Sap floating village. It was an amazing trip and I'll definitely recommend Sophoan to my friends when they plan their trip to Cambodia!
